London based Womenswear designer @jameskelly_uk; graduate of The Royal College of Art and winner of the AW15 fashion scout merit award, speaks how tempestuous hallucinations, emotions and artists inspire his ostentatious designs.
My name is James Kelly I am a London based Womenswear designer who recently graduated from the Royal College of Art.
Fashion to me, means the ability to dream.
DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE
My style in terms of work is an ambiguous take on coats and jackets with a focus on texture and distortion. My personal style is quite low key, a good strong jacket and sometimes crazy shoes.
WHERE IT BEGAN
I just woke up one day and wanted to give it a try, from that day on I was hooked!
BEST AND WORSE THINGS ABOUT YOUR LIFESTYLE
Best has to be able to do what I love and being able to be really personal and creative with my work. Worst has to be the uncertainty which also is a good point strangely enough and the long hours.
Just emotions really, my emotions are integral to my work and designs. I love observations and the idea of memories captured physically. It all comes from everywhere. Anything and everything I see has an influence on me. I hold the strongest love and respect for the work of David Lynch, Virginia Woolf and Egon Schiele.
For my final collection, it was an attempt to photographically capture a girl caught in a storm, while wearing a lost loves coat. So it would will with air and fall away from the girl and when photographed caused a blur, all done with tones and textures.
FUTURE OF FASHION
Strong brand identities, the creative younger designers are the future.
HOPES AND DREAMS
To establish myself as a designer in my own right and to be always able to create and make women feel beautiful!
