Meet @betsygreaves & @peterfmackinnon
Striking long distance couple, nineteen year old student @betsygreaves, based in Sydney, Australia and twenty four year old construction worker, in Scotland, @peterfmackinnon, explain the trials and tribulations of their long distance relationship and how they manage to maintain the conspicuous bond that their followers crave for themselves.
WHO ARE YOU
P: I’m an English and History graduate from Scotland, I have always lived here. I’m six feet tall and I’ve never finished a book. I like vodka and hate Converse.
B: I’m a Fine Arts/Arts student who loves to watch the cooking channel and hates bogans.
P: I don’t have a style but my clothes will invariably end up food-stained and torn within a month of buying them.
B: I honestly only really wear gym clothes.
HOW YOU BEGUN
P: Betsy sent me a message on tumblr a couple of years ago. She seemed interesting, however we never really spoke. We started to talk often in August last year (when she was in Europe travelling (actually, New York at that point) and we decided she shouldn’t go back to Australia without seeing me.
B: We'd followed each other on Tumblr for a couple of years and had spoken occasionally, but one day Peter asked me for my phone number because he knew I was going to be in Europe soon and I went to meet him in Scotland a few months later.
WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WERE IN LOVE
B: I’d been staying at his house for a few weeks while I was in Europe last year and I’d been sick in bed for at least a week of that. I was lying on the couch when he got home from work and asked him if he could go to the chemist and buy me some Nurofen. He came back with painkillers and a card that said “get well soon”, so I gave him a big hug and the words “I love you” slipped out of my mouth. He didn’t hear me but I couldn’t stop thinking about it after that. I told him that night.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR LIVES
P: I go to work Monday to Friday, so that bit takes care of itself. On my lunch I usually call Betsy, and we’ll talk on the weekend too. We use any holidays we have to see each other. My passion is being happy and I’m doing quite well at that.
B: The nine-hour time difference between us actually works in our favour in this respect. We talk mornings and nights, but we have the most part of our days to ourselves.
P: Sexting. Also it is nice to know when you will be seeing your other next. So try and sort that out quickly or one of you will go in the huff (me.)
B: I’m not going to sugar coat it; it’s pretty brutal. You just need to find ways around it. Invest in a good vibrator.
P: I suppose without it there wouldn’t be one, so it hasn’t so much affected it as initiated it. Since we’ve been together I don’t think it has played a great part in our relationship.
B: Our relationship wouldn’t exist without it.
P: If people genuinely feel that way then that’s quite a nice thought, however I doubt anyone thinks about our relationship when they’re not on Instagram.
B: People need to stop saying that.
P: I bet on football and listen to Three 6 Mafia. I cook every day as well. That’s all I do, you’d be surprised how much time these can take up.
B: I’m studying German at university. I want to move to Berlin, I’m in love with it.
