Internet creative @elaynealmoses, at just 19, recognised by young people all across the globe for his sensational literary and visual abilities, shares his thoughts on the positives and pressures of social media and how sports and Switzerland keeps him at ease with his prominence on the web.
I think I don't know myself really well. I guess I'm creative and really into art, films, fashion and photography. Some adjectives that come into my mind would be modest, communicative, determined, easy going, emotional, intuitive, upbeat and affable.
My style is very simple. I love to mix sporty with classy. I don't like to wear too much colour stick to white, black, blue or grey colours, playing a lot with patterns or cuts/fabrics. I like it comfortable and something with not much effort in it- it shouldn't look like I thought more than 10minutes about it even if I did think about it quite a while it should be easy going.
WHEN DID YOU BEGIN TO GET NOTICED
I had my blog since October 2011 and got first noticed or first hyped late October 2012 and from there I guess I built up what I have today.
Social Media in general is great. It allows you to connect with people from different continents. You have the ability to have a platform to express yourself and share your opinions. It is awesome how many things can become a movement just through social media. The Power of social media definitely is the rapid viral explosion it can have; nothing has such a power to reach that many people. It has many perks but It also of course like everything has some dark sides. In my eyes for some people social media simply isn't good. Often people strive for affection or respect. They want to impress people and die because of their criticism. Especially the younger generation grows up with likes on Instagram rather than playing outside. I think that’s dangerous but also a part of 2015. All in all social media has a great influence and power and can be used for good reasons but it can be dangerous because it's behind a screen and that makes it easier to hurt people with opinions that you wouldn't tell them face to face.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND DEVELOPMENTS
One achievement definitely is that I can do an interview like that with you. I have had two interviews already with fashion magazines and this is crazy to me. It's something I can be proud because I can stand for an opinion and have people that care about it. To have an influence like that and be interesting is just flattering no matter what. That someone truly cares about my words is amazing, everyone would love that and I humbled about that! This is definitely something that will stay long for me. Also that some clothing brands simply approach me to collaborate. I'm always up for stuff like that If I truly like their clothing or whatever item they are producing. To help others with that is just so cool. Being able to help other young people creating and get their brand know is great. Something I'm proud of myself is that I stopped caring about what others think. That's something that I was forced to do basically. Having so much people knowing you, judging you and building their opinions about you- you have no other way to grow a second skin. I was 15 when I entered the internet world and of course got a lot of hate, critics and bad comments and all this stuff and when you are 15, insecure anyway and you have no bad intentions, stuff like this puts you down. I had to learn to stand up for myself. It helped me not only on the internet but now at 19 years It helped me for my real life as well. Judgements do not only happen on a screen but also on the streets. Thanks to the internet I learnt that very early, not to be bothered by others opinion, I'm thankful for that. I have eighteen year old friends that still have an issue with being upset by others options and feel quite sorry about that but I try to help them.
I do sport nearly every day. It helps me to get my head empty and fill it with positive energy. It is such a satisfying feeling after you have worked out and sweated. Being healthy has become such an important part of my live. Eating and sport have become an addiction – only because I have been very insecure about my body and finally having the guts to change that is amazing. I love reading as well as travelling. At the moment this things come quite short because I have to study or my final exams and after I hopefully passed them I will start working in an agency or fashion magazine. I hope either of them will work out because I'm looking forward to work in that business.
LIFE POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES
Negative are that school takes a lot of time out of my day. I barely have time to exercise as much as I want to. Positive I'm going to have a good education and be able to attend some very nice schools if I want to, in order to follow my dream.
I Take inspiration out of everything! From catwalks, to people on the streets to buildings or art. Whatever catches my eye will stay in my mind. The more you open your eyes the more influences and inspiration you get. It is so IMPORTANT not to stare down at your phone. I try to remember to look up and appreciate the beauty and impressive things outside the internet world, which way more interesting than social media.
THE INFLUENCE YOU HAVE
It's great! I never really had a dream when I was young. All I can remember was that I wanted to make a difference in someone’s life, to have a voice and I feel as though I do have that which is mind-blowing. I often get messages that in some schools in Australia or even Singapore literally everyone knows who I am and talks about me and this gives me anxiety because I cannot imagine that. I live in Zurich and I'm not a 'phenomenon' at all, everything is as it always was because my followers come more from different countries but to be honest that’s perfect. I'M REALLY happy that here in Switzerland it's really calm about me because I don't like the pressure of being known. I have so much respect for Kim K or Justin Bieber because they live with such a pressure of being famous, I would never want that. I'M HAPPY to be unknown here but have quite a big influence thousand kilometres away from me.
TOP 3 YOU FOLLOW
That's really hard. I can't say that to be honest because I rarely look at other blogs intensively. But meanplastic is a blog I look to when I feel sad because it's really funny.
UNUSUAL ITEMS YOU OWN
There's been this blow bubble maker thingy under my bed for more than a year that I'm still waiting to use it and a pile of clothes that I have bought but never worn but I refuse to think about that because I hate regrets and lost money.
